By Jenifer Ingerman Miller ~ Art by Melanie Hall

It’s nighttime in the city, but the city never sleeps.
The taxis keep on honking, and the traffic crawls and creeps.
The trains rush out of stations, and the planes come in to land.
The tugboats tow the ships to sea as waves churn up the sand.

On bridges and on skyscrapers, on each avenue and street,
the lights are glowing brightly while the night crews stop and eat.
The transit buses thunder by; the air brakes hiss and squeal.
The bakers are now baking for tomorrow’s morning meal.

The ambulances holler; the garbage trucks back in.
But you can find me sound asleep, with covers to my chin.
When night falls in the city, there’s no place I’d rather be,
because the city noises sing a lullaby for me.
